DOG TRAINER SHELLEY
I have the know-how you need.
I am a Certified Master Dog Trainer, with an educational background in Psychology. I have been training both dogs and their owners in Richmond for over 20 years! My training combines counter conditioning and positive reinforcements rather than the old method of reprimanding for bad behavior. I am also a published writer, having written a local column for the Richmond News for 4 years called “Barking Back” on dog behavior and dog training as well as been on the radio countless times talking about dog behavior and training issues. IF you have a new puppy or a “new to you” dog I can help you build a great relationship with your dog, where you are both speaking the same language!
I look forward to helping you have an amazing relationship with your dog, where you both understand each other.
NO MORE FRUSTRATION
Learn to understand your dog or puppy! A solid foundation of obedience training can help prevent the most common dog behavioral problems:
- Excessive barking or whining.
- Separation anxiety
- Leash pulling
- Not listening when off-leash
- Destroying furniture or personal items
- Displaying aggression toward other dogs or people
WHO is SHELLEY?
Shelley Smith is a Certified Master Dog Trainer with an educational background in Psychology. She has been training dogs and their owners for over 20 years. Shelley's training combines counter conditioning (replacing unwanted behavior with more appropriate behavior) and positive reinforcements rather than just the old method of reprimanding for bad behavior.
Shelley is a published writer on dog behavior and training. You can read some of her articles on this website blog.
Shelley keeps current in the dog world by attending seminars and workshops on dog training and behavior and by competing in obedience and dog sports with her own dogs. She currently lives with a German Shepherd and a cat. She has also provided a good home to Rescue Dogs.
Many listeners in the Lower Mainland will have heard Shelley on CKNW Radio with Phillip Till, as their dog behaviour specialist. She has also written a monthly dog training column in The Richmond News called "Barking Back".
In 2008, she was a member of the Dogs in Parks Task Force formed by City of Richmond to help solve local dog issues and problems occuring throughout the city. She was the only canine specialist that was invited to participate in the organization due to her extensive knowledge and expertise.

Shelly followed up each class with handouts so I was able to review what was covered during the week. Got lots of training tips that I will use over the summer to continue my training. Shelly is easy to contact to clarify and help with issues. Loved the classesTrustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Tracy Conradson2024-05-25Shelley is great. Very personable and knowledgeable. We enjoyed our weekly sessions and are amazed how we started with our Pup who was too afraid to even walk up the stairs and growled at anyone or dog nearby to becoming more confident and eager to go to the class..Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.K L Bey2023-11-12Shelley's website says "I have the know-how you need". That sums it all up. What it doesn't tell you is how SUPPORTIVE she is of her clients. My Frenchie, Esme, has been transformed by working with Shelley.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Keira MacVicar2023-11-11In the very first class I attended, I learned approaches that no one had taught me before (I've been in many classes with several different dogs). Shelley is highly knowledgeable, experienced, and generous with her time ( you are encouraged to phone or text if you have questions between lessons). And she's funny! If you do the work she recommends, you'll have a much better life with your dog. Shelley is awesome.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Melissa Yang2023-11-11Trained both my dogs with Shelley! She's amazing and so helpful. I brought a shelter dog from Korea with some trauma and I was able to develop a great trusting relationship with her with the help of Shelley. I appreciate her help so much!Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Haylie Segal2023-11-10I recently had the pleasure of working with Shelley Smith to train our large breed, timid foster-turned-adopted puppy. From the outset, Shelley's depth of knowledge about dog behavior was immediately apparent. She showed an extraordinary level of patience and understanding, not just with our dog, but also in guiding me through the training process. Our puppy, who is naturally shy, responded incredibly well to Shelley's methods. Her approach was gentle yet effective, creating a safe and encouraging environment for our dog to learn and grow. She didn't just train our dog; she educated us on how to maintain and continue the training at home, which has been invaluable. What truly set Shelley apart was her willingness to go above and beyond. She spent over an hour talking to me, offering insights and advice specific to our dog's breed and temperament. This level of personalized attention and care is something I haven't experienced with other trainers. Shelley's expertise, combined with her genuine love for animals, shines through in her work. She has not only helped our dog with his timidness but has also empowered us as pet owners. I wholeheartedly recommend Shelley Smith Dog Training to any pet owner who wants a knowledgeable, patient, and incredibly skilled trainer. Our experience was nothing short of exceptional!Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Kat Co2023-08-23Shelley is a wonderful dog trainer! She is passionate in helping her students, in and out of class hours with any problems you want to overcome with training. She is empathetic and experienced while also able to adapt her training recommendations to each owner and dog. Her group obedience class is in a large grassy field with plenty of space for several dogs and owners to be in without feeling too close to each other. With other dogs, people, and smells, it’s a great controlled environment to train with your dog to help prepare for real-life distractions. Thank you Shelley!Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Shelley C2023-08-19Shelley is very knowledgeable and she really understands dogs and their behaviors. The group classes were fun and Remi and I learned so much to help set us up to be successful in our training. Shelley answered all my questions and gave great tips to use even out of class -as she says " I'm only a phone call or email away".At the end of every class she hands out a summary for practicing at home. Great class to take.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Preddy Prasad2023-08-17We have brought both of our dogs to Shelley for training and have had great outcomes! She focuses on positive reinforcement during training and really does have the "know-how" we need. She is very encouraging to the trainers and is fun to work with. Group classes were very beneficial to our dogs learning and confidence. Highly recommend her training! If we had 5 dogs we would still be coming here.Trustindex verifies that the original source of the review is Google.Melissa H2023-06-24Excellent trainer. She is very kind and helpful. She really helped me to bring my rescue dog out of its shell and to walk better beside me on the leashis a good skill for them to learn for safety reasons. She teaches the importance of using collars and devices that don’t hurt the dog. Her technique uses correction that are safe and pain free and uses treats as rewards and lots of praise and it makes it a fun experience for the dog and owner. If you are struggling in an area she will take the time to work with you one on one to get things right and provides written explanations in her course and is always happy to answer email or phone questions. I highly recommend this excellent trainer.
